THE Stratford Express has been tied in to this area of East London for over
150 years, first established in 1866 and run by the Wilson and Whitworth
partnership, from offices above their stationery and leather store in The
Broadway, (now covered over by The Mall, Stratford).
The company was family run, and prided itself on being a voice for the
people, community minded, offering readers the latest news, features,
impressive sports coverage including West Ham United, boxing, table tennis
and athletics - and competetive rates for all our advertising.
Back then there were two councils, West Ham and East Ham respectively, until
their amalgamation and immergence of Newham Council in 1964.
But the Stratford Express' principles and ideals remain... and are still as
strong. The community matters - and all the people, from all walks of life
and ethnic backgrounds, who make up that community, matter.
Newham is the place to be. One only has to list the vital and important
projects that exist, ie London City Airport, ExCel exhibition centre, the
£7m refurbished Theatre Royal, Stratford Circus, Jubilee Line extension, new
Dockland campus, Thames Gateway to name but a few - and to come, Stratford
City, the incredible Channel Tunnel international link and massive Olympic
village.
This is Newham's vision for the future. A vibrant multi-racial and
multi-cultural community. The Express endorses that aim.
Newham is bounded by the River Thames in the south, the River Lea in the
west, the River Roding in the east and Wanstead Flats in the north.
It¹s key location as the gateway to London has shaped its past and will
influence its future. The Express has a lot more to offer to its readers,
especially by the interest in the big wide web.
We are there for the people for it¹s the people that matter.
