Action is needed to tackle child poverty

10 June 2009
CONCERTED action is needed to tackle child poverty in Newham, say campaigners.

London is the UK's most deprived region with the east of the capital worst affected, according to 4 in 10: The End Child Poverty London Project.

Spokeswoman Liz Thorne said: "Poverty blights children's lives and this report demonstrates the direct impact on children in Newham.

"The alarming prevalence of such poverty in one of the world's richest cities is something which should shame us all."

Newham is among the worst performing boroughs, according to the research by the City Parochial Foundation and New Policy Institute on issues such as numbers of workless adults, children in workless families, low paid residents, infant mortality, premature deaths and households in temporary accommodation. The borough scored lower overall than Hackney and Tower Hamlets.
